How to apply topical numbing cream?

beauty treatment biosenseclinical custom compound injection laser newsletter numb numbing cream tattoo topical anesthetics

Topical anesthetics (numbing agents) are commonly used in different cosmetic procedures such as laser hair removal, electrolysis, microneedling, microblading, permanent makeup and tattooing. It is also indicated for reducing pain at injection site or muscle pain.

The 'caines' including benzocaine, lidocaine and tetracaine are the active numbing ingredients. Lidocaine is most commonly seen in commercially available topical numbing products. It comes in cream and ointment forms. Prilocaine and lidocaine is another combination in which prilocaine helps to kick in faster before lidocaine. Benzocaine has the quickest onset of action, then lidocaine kicks in next and tetracaine comes in last. Other ‘caines’ including benzocaine and tetracaine are also commonly combined with lidocaine in custom compound formulation offering a faster start and longer acting effect. One of our custom compound specialties is the area of cosmeceutical procedure pain management.

To maximize the numbing effect of numbing cream, how to apply is very important. Apply about 30 to 45 minutes before the procedure. Apply the cream and rub in well until it’s clear. A second layer can be applied or the area can be covered with saran wrap. Once numb, wipe off the numbing cream with damped cloth or tissue paper.
